Are you tired of the long enduring process of choosing a new book to read? Do not fret, you are in the right place. In this blog post I will be listing popular YA books and great alternatives/similar books you can read if you enjoyed them.
1. If you liked Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass...
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black - The Cruel Prince is about Jude, a mortal taken to The High Court of Faerie when her parents are brutally murdered. Despite being born in the human world, Jude wants nothing but to belong in the Faerie world. However, many fey despise humans, especially Cardan, the youngest son of the High King. Jude must defy Cardan to win a place on the court, but defiance comes with violence and consequences. Before long, the court is at stake, and it is up to Jude to save The Land of Faerie. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these books and I can confidently say they lived up to the hype surrounding them. They both have great pacing and keep you hooked until the end. I remember I finished The Cruel Prince and immediately was searching Amazon and ThriftBooks for the next book. Along with both being amazing reads, these books also both have strong female main characters who are not afraid to take charge of their future and defy anyone that comes in their way. If you liked Throne of Glass’s main character you will definitely enjoy watching Jude navigate her way through finding her identity and achieve her goals. These stories also take place in similar settings so if you liked the mystical Land of Erilea, welcome to The High Court of Faerie! Not to mention both of these books include a fair share of romance as well.
2. If you liked We Were Liars by E. Lockhart...
The Other Shepards by Adele Griffin - The Other Shepherds is about two sisters, Geneva and Holland, who have been living in a shadow ever since their three siblings tragically died in a car accident twenty years earlier. The Other Shepards and We Were Liars have similar plots both showing characters after an impactful event, the endings of these both are also similar. The Other Shepards is one of my favorite books as it was the first book where I experienced an epiphany moment. The pace of this book is great and the writer did an amazing job demonstrating coping after a big loss. This book is incredible. Conversely, We Were Liars was a horrible read for me. I initially discovered this book on TikTok while it was trending so I had very high expectations. Nonetheless, it took me over a half a year to finish this book. The writing was sloppy and the pace of the story was incredibly slow. I was very disappointed by this book and I have seen other people feel this way as well. The Other Shepards is a great alternative and an amazing book in general.
3. If you liked Legend by Marie Lu....
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - Shatter Me is about Juliette whose touch kills. After Juliette accidentally kills a little boy with her touch, she is locked away in the Reestablishment’s cells ensuring she will not come into contact with anyone else. While Juliette is locked away the outer world is crumbling, disease is spreading, food is scarce, and war is brewing. The Reestablishment now needs Juliette’s lethal touch as a weapon for war and offers her a way out of her lifelong sentence. Will she accept? The main similarity between these two books is the main character. Both Day and Juliette are seen as high risk criminals, perhaps for different reasons. Even though they are both criminals, they contrast in ethics and their moral views clash which is refreshing to read. Needless to say they are also both set in a dystopian world, and they certainly live up to the genre. I read both of these books and enjoyed both of them greatly.
